Two Wildcats Advance to Second Round of Section Golf Tourney

The Section 3A Golf Tournament began last Wednesday at the Worthington Country Club. The tournament continues this Wednesday.

Samantha Freking and Sarah Madsen were the two Heorn Lake-Okabena Wildcats who earned advancement to the second day of the tournament.

The top four teams and top 25 percent of the individual gofers not on a qualifying team earned the right to continue in the tournament next week.

Abbi Herding was the girls medalist, shooting 81 for WWG. Windom took the top team honors, having three girls finish in the top four, behind Herding.

The top four girls teams were Windom, Westbrook-Walnut Grove, Adrian and Fulda. HLO was in fifth place as a team, just two strokes shy of advancing their entire team to the second day of the tournament.

S. Freking led the Wildcats with 103 on the day, followed by Madsen with 111. Freking finished in tenth place, of the approximately sixty girls golfers competing. Brooke Freking finished with 117, and Haley Ruesch came in with 121 to complete the Wildcats score.

In addition to Windom, WWG, Adrian, Fulda, and HLO, Hendricks, Russel-Tyler-Ruthton, Murray County Central, Red Rock Central, Southwest Christian/Edgerton, Tracy-Milroy-Balaton and Wabasso took part in the first day of the Section 3A tourney.

Murray County Central led the boys teams, shooting 354 and led by Brad Schreiber with 84.

For the Wildcats, sophomores Ben Sheldahl and Wyatt Schumacher finished with 102 and 112 respectively. Ethan Koep followed with 118, and Kaleb Sydnes came in with 123.

Sheldahl narrowly missed advancing to the second round of the tournament. He just missed being in the top 25 percent of individuals not on a qualifying team, as he was the next highest finisher.

The four teams advancing to day two of the Section Tourney are MCC, WWG, Windom and Fulda. They were followed by RTR, Adrian, HBC, Wabasso, SWC/Edgerton, HLO, RRC, TMB and Hendricks.

The Section Golf Finals will be held at Worthington on Wednesday, June 1. The top team will be named Section Champion and advances to the state golf meet. In addition, the top five individuals not advancing with the winning team can earn advancement to the state meet as individual competitors. There will be playoffs for final position if there are ties. Freking and Madsen will be competing for the right to advance.
