ImPACT testing done for SWU Athletes

On Thursday, August 9, athletes from SWU sports teams took the ImPACT concussion test sponsored by Sanford. The ImPACT test was developed in the 1990s in order to diagnose concussions. It has been used in professional leagues such as the National Football League and Major League Baseball. Sanford in Worthington donated the ImPACT testing to Southwest Star Concept. The test is computer based and focuses on short term memory and mental quickness. The baseline test is the first test that all of the athletes are required to take, and if a head injury occurs, the athlete will then retake the test to see how they perform compared to the first test. Glenn Johnson is the Sanford Worthington rehab services manager who helped make the testing possible for Southwest Star Concept. He explained the testing process to the students and helped administer the tests. Joel Krekelberg has also been involved with the ImPACT tests as he is the Worthington athletic trainer. Last year Worthington High School was able to administer the tests to all their athletes. The sections of the test consist of different questions; one module words flashing on the screen then asking later whether or not certain words were shown in that grouping. Not only did the tests record right and wrong answers, but also the speed in which the tester could answer them. Many of the questions were based on speed and quick thinking.
