So begins what may become a somewhat regular feature of the Tri County News depending on how space, time and material are available. Thank you to the staff of the Tri County News for making this possible! Hopefully we can share some of the current goings on of the planning, fund raising and construction of the memorial. Also, this update plans on bringing some of the history of our areas service women and men to print. The fall of 2010 saw the beginning of planning for the Veterans Memorial. A number of local area people met to explore the possibility of having a memorial. Throughout the winter of 2010-2011 this committee met to share ideas and thoughts, while pursuing the acquisition of the lot owned by Tom and Evelyn Jay that is directly adjacent to the Community Center in Heron Lake. By spring of 2012 we had proceeded far enough along to sign the paperwork to acquire the lot. The committee was thrilled to accept the donation of the lot from Tom and Evelyn. As many of the area remember, Tom and Evelyn are former Heron Lake residents who were long time owners of the Jack and Jill Grocery Store. Tom, who grew up in Worthington and is a veteran, along with Evelyn, were enthusiastic about the idea of a memorial on the old Dale Ogg Purina Feed Store site. With the lot site secured, the committee was prepared to kick off the fund raising portion at Memorial Day Services held May 28, 2012 at Heron Lake.
