It's a sight to see; luminaries glowing with pictures and names of loved ones, hoping to raise awareness and funds for a cure.
On Friday, August 3rd, the Relay For Life event will begin at 4 p.m., continuing until midnight.
The American Cancer Society has been at work trying to eliminate cancer as a major health problem by creating a world with less cancer and more birthdays. They focus on prevention, treatment, and also awareness. Relay For Life is one of the many ways that families can honor those lost, and support those still fighting against the deadly disease.
Relay For Life events normally begin with an opening ceremony, continuing with a survivor lap for those who have fought against cancer. Teams are created to take part in the Relay. Each group sells luminaries, which is one way to raise money for the cause.
Luminaries light the path for the night time walking. They are white paper bags with sand to keep them upright, and a candle placed inside of them. These bags bear the names of loved ones who have fought against cancer, either in honor of, or in memory of them. To represent someone who has been affected by cancer, luminaries can be bought, decorated, and placed on the track for the Relay. Each candle represents one person; after dark, seeing the luminaries flicker and glow is a beautiful sight.
There are five teams registered so far for the event. Eva Rostomily of Heron Lake is the captain for her team, “Footprints.” She has been selling luminaries, which are 10 dollars each. Interested individuals can contact her to purchase luminaries, 793-2675.
