The organization Students Today Leaders Forever, or STLF, was founded by the University of Minnesota, and they created a Pay it Forward project in which students, including Madie Roos from Round Lake-Brewster High School, could join together from June 19 to the 23rd to tackle community volunteer projects around the Midwest to teach kids about serving others.
With a group of 32 kids from Worthington area, the Pay it Forward tour began at Waterloo, Iowa, where the students cleaned the stalls in a horse farm. Next, they attended a college visit at the University of Northern Iowa.
They continued on to Peoria, Illinois, where they joined with a local church and carried out numerous volunteer projects around town, such as painting houses and cleaning the community center.
In Edwardsville, Illinois, the group visited a nursing home; they socialized with the residents and painted their nails. They continued to St. Louis, Missouri, cleaning up the city park. Many other service projects were carried out throughout the week.
The kids were exposed to many different environments and situations in which they could make a difference. “It was an amazing experience, and I would do it all over again in a heart beat. Everyone had so much fun,” explained Roos.
