The Public Works Department has been using an additional process to treat the water in Heron Lake since March. The goal is to scour water lines and clean out some of the manganese that appears as black particles in the water.
Part of the process included flushing mains, which may dislodge a larger than normal amount of manganese. While this is not considered to be harmful to one's health, it may not look very good during the process and may cause extra cleaning needing to be done.
If you see discolored water, this is a good time to do additional flushing of your household lines. Additional flushes of toilets and running cold water taps will help to clear private lines of the dislodged manganese. Running unheated and unsoftened taps and flushing toilets (that don't go through a softener) will hopefully flush loosened manganese from water lines without it going into water heaters and softeners.
