Tractor pull events have taken place around the state and the country for many years; and because of three men, J.D. Lewis, Wilburt Soleta, and Vernon Behrens, Okabena became an active location for such an event.
Darwin Soleta, son of Wilburt Soleta, is hosting this year's Okabena Antique Tractor Pull. He will be competing in the event as well, with his Oliver 88 tractor.
He has been competing in tractor pulls since he was a kid. Soleta explained the way that tractor pulls used to work years ago. “The tractor pulled a big piece of steel and guys would jump on in certain spots. But, that tired you out by the end of the day.”
Now, the sled in which the tractor hooks has a weight system that increasingly adds friction, making it harder for the tractor to pull. Then, they measure how far the tractor can go without stalling within a 300 foot stretch.
