“I am certain that every person has been touched by cancer in some way, we all know someone who has had cancer,” Relay For Life chair Kim Lambert said. And the disease continues to touch people’s lives. The annual Relay For Life is a way to raise funds to help find a cure for the disease, and over $93,700 was raised at the Nobles County event held on Friday.
“Cancer fears the walker and we had cancer trembling Friday night with all of the people walking the track in Worthington!,” Lambert exclaimed following the Relay. Having met their fundraising goal, the committee hopes to extend that and reach $100,000 raised.
A beautiful evening at the Nobles County Fairgrounds was the setting for this year’s event, which featured honorary chair Heidi Heckenlaible sharing the story of how cancer has touched her life.Diagnosed with leukemia, she spent six weeks in the hospital and was given a bone marrow transplant.
Over twenty teams helped to raise funds for the event, with the Farley’s & Sathers Starlights team again leading the way, with nearly $23,000 raised this year. The group of employees has led the fundraising efforts for several years. They have used a variety of events to help raise funds, including a golf outing, rummage sale and several in-house events at the Round Lake business, in addition to donations from their company.
