| The Wilmont Half-Century Tragedy Commemoration Committee continues to meet, finalizing plans for a day of remembrance, as well as a the placement of a permanent marker in memory of the victims that died in the tragic accident that occurred between Reading and Wilmont on August 13, 1960. Nine people lost their lives in the accident, six from the Wilmont area. The accident left 38 children without a mother and six of those children also lost their father. The accident shook the community and surrounding area. Fifty years have passed and late last year a committee was formed to find a way to permanently honor the victims of the accident. The committee continues to seek financial contributions, as well as volunteers to assist with the project. Plans to date include the placement of a memorial marker. The marker will be a large granite bench that will be put in place on a 12x12 square of tiles, and will be located in Wilmont, MN, on the grassy area just north of the bank drive-thru, across the street from the community center. It will be engraved with the following words: "In loving memory of our family, friends and neighbor who lost their lives on August 13, 1960. Blessed be their memory." On Saturday, August 14, 2010, there will be a Mass at Our Lady of Good Counsel church in Wilmont, beginning at 10:30 a.m. and led by Fr. Timothy Hall. Following Mass there will be a commemoration of the marker, with a meal at the Wilmont VFW. The meal will include roast beef, potatoes, gravy, a vegetable, dessert and beverage.
