People from all over the state and country come to Okabena and Heron Lake, Minnesota to celebrate the 4th of July.
People from all over the state and country come to Okabena and Heron Lake, Minnesota to celebrate the 4th of July. There are a ton of events going on July 3 and 4 for everyone of all ages to have some fun! Starting on July 3, the Annual Summer Pork Cook Out will be held once again. The Heron Lake Community Center starts serving at 5:30 p.m. The Heron Lake Community Club will also be serving strawberries and ice cream. The cost is $6.50/ plate for 8 oz. boneless pork chop, potato salad, baked beans, and lemonade. For grilled rib sandwich with sides and beverage is only $5.50/ plate. The whole public is invited. This event is sponsored by the Heron Lake Pork Producers. The Heron Lake Street Dance is entertainment that is provided every year. This band performs every July 3. The dance begins at 8:30 p.m. and will end around 12:00 a.m. on the Heron Lake Main Street. The band playing this year will be 69 Cents. The cost to see them perform is $5:00/person. This event is sponsored by the Young Mens Club of Heron Lake. Everyone is invited to join in the entertainment! The Okabena 4th of July Celebration will take place for another year. There are a whole day of events planned for this small town. Starting at 11:00 a.m. will be the Kiddie Pedal Pull. After that, the Kiddie Parade will take place at 2:15 p.m. The lineup for this parade begins at 1:45 p.m. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. There will be judging involved in this parade. Each kid will be judged on; Original, Storybook/ Nursery Rhyme, and Patriotic. Prizes will be awarded in each category and children will be recognized for their participation. Children of all ages are welcome to join these kids activities! At 2:30 p.m., the Independence Parade will begin. There will be a Patriotic Program at the Legion beginning at 4:00 p.m. An Antique Tractor Display will be near Main Street. From 3:30-8:00 p.m., DJ Cory Paplow at OMLS will be performing some music for everyone. Also at the OMLS starting at 9:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m., The Roxbury Drive will be playing. The beer garden will be selling beer for 16 oz. tap for $2.00. St. John’s park will be the site of an ice cream social after the parade. At 5:00, there will be the slowest tractor contest on main street, and at 5:30, the doors will be open at the Legion for Bingo, and Bingo will begin at 6:30. The Variety Show will begin at 6:30 p.m. like every year in the school gym. This year they will feature “Sean Benz” from Windom, Minnesota. At the park in Okabena, there will be a “Kraft Variety” taking place. Following sundown on the baseball field, the fireworks will begin. They estimate the fireworks will begin about 10:00 p.m. After the fireworks, there will be Raffle Drawings. Throughout all these events, there will be concessions, ball games, kiddie rides, and games for everyone in the park. Come and join us all to celebrate the 4th of July! On July 10, there will be an Antique Tractor Pull by the water tower in Okabena, starting at 11:00 a.m.
