The Heron Lake Library kicked off their summer reading program on Thursday, June 24. Youngsters were introduced to the program and then enjoyed carnival games, which were under the direction of Jackson County 4-H ambassadors. The reading program offers prizes for attaining certain levels of reading. Parents need to initial each day the child has read or is read to, and sign their booklog if it is completed. After five days of reading, for a minimum of 15 minutes for preschool to first grades to twenty minutes for second through sixth grade students, prizes can be won. The duck pond, bean bag toss and face painting were among the activities enjoyed. Youngsters also tried their skill at a shell game and in searching for seashells in a sand table. The summer reading program continues this week with a bus ride to the theater in jackson to watch “Free Willy.” Next week, the library summer reading program continues with a visit from the zooman. The Zooman, Brent Mielke, and his animal friends are returning to the Heron Lake Public Library on Thursday, July 8th as part of the summer library program, “Make a Splash... Read.” Program time is 3:00 PM. Children and families are welcome and encouraged to attend. The Zooman will be bringing a variety of reptiles. He is child oriented and will educate and entertain the young and young at heart. Make sure to come early to get a front row seat so you can get a chance to be part of the program. The Zooman allows hands-on learning and plenty of audience participation. Registration is not needed. Call your local library for more information, 793-2641.
